What
is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial release is a very effective hands-on technique
that provides sustained pressure into myofascial restrictions
to eliminate pain and restore motion. To understand myofascial
release, it is important to know what fascia is.
Fascia is a densely woven connective web which covers and
interpenetrates every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and vein
as well as all of our internal organs including the heart,
lungs, brain and spinal cord. It tends to dehydrate and
form restrictions around areas of trauma – accidents, surgery,
inflammation, repetitive use injuries, poor posture, emotional
bracing. These restrictions and resulting scar tissue remain
in the system long after the initial instability is gone.
Fascial restrictions are not revealed in standard tests
and are not treated by other modalities. Without treatment
of the fascia, our bodies are pulled into painful compensations
over and over again.
The use of myofascial release allows therapist to look at
each patient as a unique individual. One-on-one therapy
sessions are hands-on treatments during which the therapist
uses a multitude of myofascial release techniques, structural
assessment & bodywork, and therapeutic massage. The
therapist promotes independence through education in proper
body mechanics and movement, through the enhancement of
strength, flexibility, and postural and movement awareness.
